Zakir Hussain College Changes Its Name

New Delhi: Zakir Hussain College, affiliated to Delhi University (DU), situated on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, has been rechristened as Zakir Hussain Delhi College. The college has modified its name by adding Delhi to its existing name.

The college is the oldest educational institution in Delhi. Recently, both the alumni as well as the staff of the college had been demanding that the word 'Delhi' be added to the college's name, to honor its history. As per sources, the decision to modify the name was taken on Monday at a meeting of the Zakir Hussain College Memorial Trust, chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

The institution had been established in the 1700s by the first Nizam of Hyderabad and was known as Madrassa Ghaziuddin. Its earlier campus near Ajmeri Gate, established in 1948, had been known by the name Delhi College, but it was renamed as Zakir Hussain College after it had been taken over by the Trust, in 1975.
