AICTE Approves Plan to Get B Tech Course in Metro Engineering from 2013

New Delhi: All Indian Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved the plan to allow universities to formulate B Tech course in Metro Engineering, which can be implemented from 2013. As per sources, the approval to the plan has been given recently. Sources also confirmed that the course will give the students a four-year engineering degree and will aim at training engineers to fuel the development in the transport system, all across the country.

In the same context, a senior AICTE official said that the idea of introducing such a course actually came from the Delhi Metro administration. Moreover, the administration had written to the Minister of Human Resource Development, asking for his permission to allow universities to introduce a course that would provide personnel trained in the field of Metro Rail Transport Systems, he added.

Furthermore, he said that Metro rail system has seen huge success in foreign countries as well as in India. Also, it is a field that will see tremendous growth in the coming years as more and more cities are planning Metro lines. As such, the council assumes that it is important to train specialized engineers for this, he concluded.

The course is expected to start in 2013 with its first batch of students passing out in 2017. Since Metro has various specializations in terms of technical expertise, the course is expected to give students options of choosing from electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering for Metro in the last year. In addition, Metro engineering is the 274th B Tech course to be approved by the AICTE.
