DU to Abandon Re-Evaluation System in 2013

New Delhi: After the inception of semester system, Delhi University (DU) students have another reason to worry about. As per the university officials, reevaluation and rechecking of answer sheets will also be withdrawn in 2013. Reportedly, the semester system will be introduced across all batches.

Sources said that despite a rapid hike in re-evaluation and re-checking charges by DU, the system may altogether be eliminated as soon as the semester system is introduced across all three years. Only the Law Faculty offers the option of rechecking the answer sheets, with the fee for the same being hiked from Rs 300 to Rs 750.

While disagreeing DU’s move to abolish re-evaluation system, Karen Gabriel, professor of English, St. Stephen's College, said that a system of re-evaluation is important because, at times, teachers who correct papers don't teach those subjects or there are ad-hoc teachers who correct these papers.

He later added that it is extremely unfair on part of Delhi University to remove both re-evaluation and rechecking because it is unfavorable to students. There is ample room for human and machine errors to crop in, Gabriel clarified. However, no alternate measure to address students' grievances on this front has been introduced yet.

DU, on the other hand, has refused to comment on this systemic change, stating that the decision has not been finalized yet and is still being reviewed by the administration. However, officials have also said that changes to reorganize the new semester system are being worked upon.

In addition to the debate, RC Sharma, Dean of examinations, said that the university needs a foolproof system wherein the call for for re-evaluation will not arise at all. And since the university is trying to streamline things under the semester system, certain administrative changes will be brought into effect, he concluded.
