IIM-A to Re-Launch its Special Courses for Bureaucrats & Civil Servants

Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIM-A) is all set to re-launch its Post Graduate Programme on Public Management Policy (PGP-PMP), which was designed for bureaucrats and civil servants, next session onwards.

The PGP-PMP is a one-year full-time residential programme, which aims at creating platform for dialogue in framing government policies. Sources have informed that the programme was put on hold in 2009-10 for two academic sessions. According to the statement issued by IIM-A faculty, the PGP-PMP is likely to be revived from the next academic year. However, there has not been any official announcement yet. There are chances that the course may be offered from next year.

Samir Barua, Director, IIM-A, said that a committee instituted by IIM-A in 2010 has reviewed the entire package. He said that the committee that reviewed the programme has submitted a report, which will be considered by the faculty and board before any decision is taken.

Initially, when PGP-PMP was launched the fee was fixed at Rs 8 lakh for government-sponsored candidates. Later on, the institute decided to raise the fees to Rs 12 lakh in 2008-09 batch and to Rs 20 lakh for the 2009-10 batch. However, the proposal to review the fee for sponsored candidates was not accepted by the government, which insisted on staying at Rs 8 lakh, thus making it expensive for IIM-A.

Furthermore, the faculty informed that the programme could not be renewed in 2010 as DoPT was not ready to accept the fees proposed by IIM-A for the programme. In addition, to the course and fee structure, there were other reasons like high-running costs and declining interest rate of the government. The government did not send or sponsor many officials who could influence decision making.
