IIT-Kanpur Discusses the Benefits of Solar Energy

Kanpur: The benefits of solar energy was discussed at a two-day seminar on 'Micro solar energy generation and utilisation', held at Indian Institute of Technology - Kanpur (IIT-Kanpur). The seminar commenced from Saturday (Sept 3, 2011) and it was conducted in association with the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), Kanpur. 
As per sources, the programme began with a formal inauguration ceremony and Saraswati Vandana. The souvenir of the seminar was also released. Deputy Director SC Srivastava and RK Gupta from IETE were the chief guests to felicitate the occasion. Apart from them some of the other guests were present - R S Anand of IIT-Kanpur, who is also the convener of the programme, Wing Commander SK Ghuriani, AK Chaturvedi, Dean, research and development of the institute, RK Gupta, SC Srivastava, deputy director, IIT-Kanpur, RK Gupta from IETE and other guests were present.
The subject matter of the seminar is to make solar energy viable for domestic and commercial use. While addressing the gathering, AK Chaturvedi has said that the photo-voltaic cell is still the new research area as the best material from which the cells could be made. He said that a solar inverter capable of generating five kilowatt of power has been installed on the roof of a lab. Besides, the inverter is generating power and it is being fed to the local grid situated within the campus. 
Furthermore, he said that that IIT-K is working in the direction of increasing the efficiency and life of solar cells. The institute is working in several other areas of solar energy under the umbrella of Solar Energy Research Enclave. Scientists and faculty members are working on various aspects of material, devices, system and policy related issues of solar energy.
