DU Academic Council Agrees to Four Year Honours Course

New Delhi: The academic council of Delhi University (DU) has given its approval for the four-year undergraduate honours course, to be offered from the upcoming session 2013. Accordingly, students taking admission in the honours programme will get their degree after four years, instead of three. As per sources, the academic council passed the proposal after a long meeting held recently. In addition, under the new system, this four year degree will be referred to as baccalaureate honours and will be consisting of research components.

While informing about the new change, Dinesh Singh, Vice Chancellor (VC), Delhi University, said that the council meeting was well attended and this is a step that will change the face of education in the University. He also added that not all students will have to take the four-year course. Students can go for a two-year associate baccalaureate degree or a three-year baccalaureate degree. Only those students who are working towards an honours degree will have to take the four-year course, he said.

The new proposal will also allow interdisciplinary work. However, the proposal will be discussed further in the executive council shortly, where it is expected to be passed without much difficulty. Adding up to the changes, the academic council has also proposed eleven new foundation courses, which will be made compulsory for all students and will give them a broader perspective.
