JMI to Implement Semester System for Undergraduate Programmes

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, is likely to allow semester system for its undergraduate (UG) programmes, from the upcoming new academic session. Two years ago, the University had shifted to the semester mode for its postgraduate programmes. Therefore, in addition to that, the University has finalized to do the same for all its UG programmes from this year.

The semester system was initially planned to be implemented from 2011-12 session, but it took time to reformulate the syllabi of the UG courses. According to the scheme, the session will be divided into six semesters with 25% internal assessment.

While discussing about the changes made, Simi Malhotra, Faculty, Department of English and Media coordinator, said that the University has been working on redoing the syllabus of the UG courses across all nine faculties of Jamia. However, the semester mode is not new to the University.

JMI had implemented the semester system at PG level in 2010. Also, the University has been successfully running a semester system for M Phil courses and in the faculty of engineering and technology for several years now.

She also added that as the University cannot run under two different modes of study. Therefore, the move is significant in order to synchronize and have a uniform university calendar. Moreover, under the semester mode, teaching is more intensive with increased teacher-student engagement, she clarified.

Malhotra further explained that implementing semesters at all levels of courses is not difficult for Jamia as it doesn't have any affiliated colleges. All its departments run independently. They can devise their own syllabi, their own mode of evaluation etc, which allows them the flexibility needed in a semester system, she concluded.
