JMI to Introduce A New Degree Course in Turkish Language and Literature

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, is all set to introduce a new degree course in Turkish Language and Literature, from the upcoming academic session July 2012. The course will be offered by the University’s department - Faculty of Humanities and Languages. The faculty has decided to launch this degree course to expand and make the study of Turkish language reachable to students.

As per sources, the University has decided to introduce this full-fledged degree course in the language, with an intake of 20 seats after seeing its popularity among students. Earlier, the faculty had been successfully running a certificate, diploma and an advanced diploma in the language.

While discussing about the newly launched course, Simi Malhotra, faculty, Department of English and Media Coordinator, said that the language is very popular amongst the students in the short-term courses that are on offer. Therefore, in order to give continuity to students and since there was no degree programme available in the language anywhere, the University thought of offering a BA (Hons) in Turkish language and Literature from the new session, she confirmed.

She further informed that candidates having senior secondary school certificate or an equivalent examination with not less than 50% marks in aggregate, are eligible to apply for the course. However, admission will be made on the basis of their performance in the entrance test scheduled to be held on June 7, 2012, followed by personal interview, to be conducted by the University.

Explaining about the future of this foreign language course, Simi said that there are many takers for the language. With the boom in the information and cyber world, there is a sudden hike in the demand for translators and content writers in the field. Also, it makes for a lucrative career option, she added.

She also informed that an in-depth knowledge of a language allows people better access to research. The course will include the study of Turkish literature as well to provide students a holistic view. Therefore, many students can opt for careers in the embassy as translators, interpreters, researchers, content writers or language teaching, she concluded.

The application forms for the degree course can be downloaded from the University’s official website: http://jmi.ac.in/. However, application forms cum prospectus can also be obtained from the sales counter of the University. The last date for submission of forms is May 7, 2012.
