Indian Institute of Science in Top 500 Global Ranking

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is the only Indian institution in the list of top 500 institutions in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2013. The ranking was released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University.
The ACWU rankings are based on several factors such as Nobel Prizes awarded, citations, published papers, medals awarded and won, articles published in journals of Nature and Science and number of researches published in top journals.

The ranking of top 10 universities:

• Harvard University
• Stanford University
• University of California-Berkeley
• Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
• Cambridge University
• California Institute of Technology
• Princeton University
• Columbia University
• Chicago University
• Oxford University

Separate lists for the top 100 universities in specialized fields were also released. IISc secured a rank of 76-100 in the top 100 engineering and technology universities, and a rank of 49 in Chemistry. IISc secured a rank of 51-75 in Computer Science and in Mathematics it secured a rank in 151-200 position.

Harvard ranks first in Physics, Chemistry and Economics. Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California, Berkeley, are the second and third best to study Physics, while the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University ranks in top three in Chemistry and ranks first in Computer Science. In Economics, it is Chicago University, which ranked second. Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked third to study Economics. In Mathematics, Princeton University ranks first, followed by Harvard University and University of California-Berkeley.
