The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has given a certificate of quality to the Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) study centre at Tihar Jail.

BIS Certifies IGNOU’s Centre at Tihar Jail

New Delhi: On Thursday i.e. December 9, 2010, an official said that the Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) study centre at Tihar Jail has received a certificate of quality from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). As per sources, Tihar Jail boasts of having IGNOU study centers and National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) inside its premises.
 
Further, sources informed that 2640 and 1900 prisoners have been enrolled in IGNOU study centers and NIOS, respectively. The aforesaid institutes offer courses like Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (B Com), Diploma in Creative Writing, Postgraduate (PG) Diploma in Distance Education, sources added. The programmes are being offered free of cost and study materials like notebooks, pens etc. are also provided to the inmates.
