BITS Pilani Students’ Designed Humanoid AcYut 4 Performs A Record Feat

New Delhi:  The Humanoid AcYut 4, designed by the students of Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani performed a feat of lifting a weight of 40CDs together. This is for the first time in the world, thus creating a world record. None of the robots created anywhere, so far, could lift this much of weight. AcYut team was represented by BITS students, Mr Akash Gupta, Miss Sushma Vallabhaneni, Mr Tushar Agrawal, Mr Roshan Maheshwari and Ankit Kulshreshtra. Team mentor, Mr Samay Kohli was also present on the occasion.

AcYut 4 attained this triumph at the 15th FIRA Robot World Cup and Congress, held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Bangalore, from September 15-19, 2010. AcYut was acknowledged with the special award by the FIRA World Cup, for creating the world record in weight lifting in the large-sized category. AcYut 4, with 98 cm height and 7.2 kgs weight, is self-directed, and is modified version of AcYut 3, which is semi-autonomous. The event was organized by Federation of International Robot Soccer Association (FIRA).

During the event, in the weightlifting competition, AcYut 4 - the robot had been given the task to lift the weight to a particular height and move 40 cms, and then it had to lift the weight 15 cm higher than the earlier position and move another 40 cms to successfully finish the task. The total time allotted for all the above mentioned tasks was 2 minutes. AcYut 4 performed these tasks in 1 minute 40 seconds to receive applause from the spectators every time, it performed the feat.

Apart from lifting weights, AcYut 4 has also been loaded with certain other special features such as it can take pictures by using its camera. For e.g, while playing football, AcYut can play the ball, take pictures and kick it to the goal by adjusting itself towards the goal. In addition, the AcYut 4 can do live balancing by measuring accelerations in six directions and magnetic fields in three directions. For instance, it can realize when it has fallen and it gets up on its own and this is done by sensing the direction of the gravity.
