New Delhi: Getting admission into Delhi University (DU) colleges is getting tougher. This year, DU’s cut-offs are likely to go up with students scoring high marks in English in the CBSE exams. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of high scorers in the subject, with 3,788 students scoring 95% and more in English, which is a compulsory subject in the best of four.
As per sources, more than 3,700 students have scored 95% or more in English Core in the CBSE exams this year as compared to just 605 students who had scored above 95% in 2009. In DU, except for admission in the science courses, English is a compulsory subject in the best of four.
Students are busy celebrating their achievement. However, teachers warn that the remarkable increase in the number of high scorers in the subject can push up cut-offs in DU. The only way the increase could have been counterbalanced if the performance in other subjects had dipped. But, the condition is different this year.
P C Jain, Principal, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), has said that it used to be due to low marks in English that the overall marks of students came down in the past. But now, if so many students have scored such high marks in the language paper, the cut-off can certainly increase. However, there is not much scope for increasing cut-offs in our college since they already have been quite high in the previous years.
