New Delhi: Delhi University’s (DU’s) disabled students are heading forward to participate in the two-day sports event in the university, which is scheduled to be held on March 6 - 7, 2010. The event would take place at Delhi University (DU) grounds prepared for the participants of the Commonwealth Games, which will witness the first of its kind of sports meet in the campus of DU.
Dr Chandra Nisha Singh, Officer on Special Duty of Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC), said that there are lots of disabled students who excel in sports in the university. EOC, in fact, has a football team from various colleges for visually impaired students. Recently the team was accorded with a trophy in a tournament, organized by the Blind Relief Association. She also added that there are quite a few students interested to participate in athletics as well. EOC have gauged a great enthusiasm among this group of students, as they want to encourage them in every possible way to come out and participate in the event.
Further, Dr Singh added that there will be no trials and selection procedure involved for their participation, as it aims to provide a wide platform to these students in the games. These students are free to participate in any sport they like. As planned by the EOC, the Shri Ram College of Commerce will be hosting the events like Javelin Throw, Short Put and races of all kinds besides a chess tournament on February 27 & 28, 2010. In order to give a level playing field to the differently-abled students on the campus the sports meet is one of the several initiatives taken up by the EOC. Moreover, the differently abled students willing to participate wont undergo under any special training, as mentioned by the EOC.
