New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced an online capacity development programme for teachers namely Academic Counselor's Training-Online (ACT-Online). The programme covers topics like evaluation of assignments, development of study skills and usage of new technologies for student support.
As per a statement issued by the University on Sunday i.e. on December 26, 2010 grounded both in theory and practice of Open Distance Learning (ODL), this programme is specifically for those who are engaged in or wish to be engaged in tutoring distance learners. It also said that generally open universities and distance learning institutes lend services of conventional teachers from universities and colleges for the purpose of academic counseling. Therefore, there is a need for professional orientation for academic counselors in the concept, theory and practice of ODL.
According to an IGNOU official, after taking this course, the counselor will be able to help students develop effective learning skills, organize support for disadvantaged and physically-challenged students and use modern computer operating system for student support. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, IGNOU Vice Chancellor has said that development in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has contributed to tremendous growth in ODL worldwide. He also added that training and continuing professional development of ODL functionaries are necessary for success of this system.
