IITs to Support Other Technical Institutions

Bangalore: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will soon be allowed to support and collaborate with other technical institutions. As per sources, the Institutes of Technology Act is being modified in order to permit the IITs to take up the responsibility of supporting and collaborating with other technical institutes.

Further, sources told that the Institutes of Technology (Amendments) Bill, 2010 will make it compulsory for all the 15 IITs to provide training, facilitate study visits, share laboratories and other resources with other technical institutions in their respective zones. The step will facilitate technical institutes that have been growing in the country but have frequently been criticized for poor standards, to collaborate with the IITs and improve their educational system.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee has suggested that the clauses that make it compulsory for all IITs to collaborate with other technical institutions should not be made mandatory. As per sources, the committee was headed by Oscar Fernandes and includes members like Rahul Gandhi, Kanimozhi and Suresh Kalmadi. As per sources, the committee had submitted its report last month.

Further, sources told that the report said that the resources, capacity and faculty at the IITs must be addressed first. In addition, the report stated that the technical educational institutions must also have the vision to support and deal with the demands of the society as well as the industry.
