New Delhi: More than 2.7 lakh students have chosen to appear for Class 10th Board examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The Board examinations are scheduled to be held in March 2011. As per sources, the CBSE has made the Class 10th Board exams optional for students, after it has implemented the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system.
Further, sources informed that the total number of students studying in Class 10th in the schools affiliated to CBSE across India are 823125. Out of which, 273538 students have opt to appear for Class 10th Board exams. Whereas, remaining students will appear for the school based term-end cumulative II exams that will be conducted in April 2011 under CCE, sources added. Apart from 2.7 lakh students, another 1.75 lakh students studying in standard X in the secondary schools, which have classes only up to 10th, will also be appearing for the Board exams.
According to Vineet Joshi, Chairman, CBSE, the CCE has turned out to be successful as in its first year itself, more students have opted to not give the board examinations compared to those who have. Further, he added that although the last date to register for the board examinations is December 18, they are quite sure that there would hardly be any changes in the number of students who have opted to give the exam. Furthermore, he informed that the number of students who had registered for class 10 board examinations last year had been 902747, whereas the number this year had gone beyond 10 lakh.
In addition, Mr. Joshi said that the students who are taking the boards in Class 10 this year are from senior secondary schools only and over 65% of students have opted for their schools' internal exams. As per sources, when Mr. Joshi was questioned that whether the schools might be imposing their decision upon students, he said that the final choice to give or not give the examinations rested with the students themselves.
