New Delhi: Delhi University (DU) has finally decided to partially implement the semester system, despite facing a lot of opposition. DU on Thursday i.e. May 6, 2010, declared the dates for the scheme to be introduced from the 2010-11 session.
However, with the teachers not cooperating in designing the syllabus, the university will now only be able to implement the system at the undergraduate level, in a phased manner. It is going to introduce semesters only in the science and commerce courses for now. Deepak Pental, Vice-Chancellor of DU has said that due to non-completion of the work on syllabus, the university would not be able to implement the system for humanities and social science courses.
Among the colleges which had collectively opposed introduction of the system from 2010 are Deshbandhu, Kirori Mal, SGND Khalsa and DCAC. Janaki Devi Memorial and Kamla Nehru observed that the university was not in a position to implement the system immediately, while Zakir Hussain (evening) felt that the semester system was not suitable for big universities like DU.
In addition, the duty for preparing the syllabus lies with the departments, most departments of Social Sciences, including English, History, Economics and Sociology, have already rejected the system.
