New Delhi: The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) have finally given a positive nod for conducting a single national-level entrance exam for admission into undergraduate programmes for science and engineering. The decision was confirmed by the directors of IIITs in a recently held meeting, headed by Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Kapil Sibal.
As per the ministry officials, the proposal to form a council for the IIITs, on the same lines of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), was also approved in the meeting. The pan-India common entrance test will now allow students to seek admission into the premier institutes of India, namely, IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and IIITs, at one stretch. Per se, the repetitiveness of sitting for numerous entrance exams and over-dependency on coaching will be reduced to great extents.
Sibal said that the proposal to hold a single national level entrance test was initiated by the T Ramasami committee. However, the final decision to carry out a single entrance test on pan-India level for IITs, NITs, and IIITs will be taken by the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE).
If all things fall into place, admission into undergraduate programmes into IITs, NITs, and IIITs through a single national level entrance test will commence from the academic session 2013-14. Issues of supporting IIITs in planning their research activity, academic matters, pay parity, and other administrative affairs also formed the agenda of the meeting.
