Raipur: Good news for candidates applying for management programmes in the new six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)! Beginning from the 2012-14 session, candidates will be relieved from appearing for group discussion (GD) for seeking admission in various graduate programmes conducted by the IIMs. After the success and positive response of the Joint Admission Process in the first year of its launch, the new IIMs have decided to hold the same every year to select and enroll qualified and deserving candidates.
The IIMs will begin their Joint Admission Process from the end of February till April, after the results of CAT 2011 are declared. To contribute towards the development of the upcoming session, the Directors of the new IIMs have announced that the GD process will be replaced by the Written Ability Test. Dr. B S Sahay, Director, IIM Raipur, confirmed that the Joint Admission Process will comprise of the test instead of the GD session. Adding to the modification, Dr P Rameshan, Director, IIM Rohtak, said that the test will run for 10-15 minutes in duration, though it has not yet been confirmed.
Ramshan further added that the score obtained in the test will be applicable and valid for all the IIMs participating in the Joint Admission Process. Over the last few years, the GD process has been eschewed from the admission process. Of all the 13 IIMs, only IIM Calcutta conducts the GD process, with the other IIMs holding Essay Writing or Written Ability Test, followed by Personal Interview. Since individual thought perspective cannot be judged during the GD process as it is likely of some candidates being overshadowed by others, the essay writing process will enable the competent authorities to analyze the written communication skills of each candidate.
IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Raipur, IIM Trichy, IIM Kashipur, and IIM Udaipur are the six new IIMs that would be participating in the Joint Admission Process. The process for admissions 2012-14 will be led by IIM Ranchi, to be held in five cities, namely, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore. The Joint Admission Process commenced last year, undertaken for admissions into the four new IIMs - IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Raipur, and IIM Trichy.
