Panjab University to Confer D Litt Degree to Khushwant Singh

ChandigarhPunjab University Spokesperson said that noted author-journalist Khushwant Singh will be honored by Panjab University with a D Litt degree at a special function at his residence in New Delhi next month. As per sources, university's syndicate took the decision, keeping Mr. Singh's age and health in mind.
 
Further, sources told that the convocation, in which the D Litt degree is to be awarded to Mr. Singh, will be held on February 14, 2011. Sources also informed that Mr. Singh had written to the university that in view of his age and poor health he would not be able to attend the convocation.
 
R C Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University has proposed that a small ceremony may be allowed to be arranged at the author's residence in New Delhi. The Vice-Chancellor has proposed this in order to confer the degree to the person himself, sources added.
 
As per sources, Mr. Singh had requested the university to consider the name of Sharda Kaushik, who has co-authored a book with him, to receive the degree on his behalf. But as a special gesture, the university decided to arrange a function at the author's home itself, sources added.
