JMI to Launch New Course in Electrical Engineering from Session 2012

New Delhi: The Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jamia MiIlia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, is all set to launch a new course from the upcoming session 2012. The course is being offered under the department of electrical engineering, which would namely be “M Tech course in Control and Instrumentation”. The M Tech will be a two-year programme which is to be started with a total intake of 18 students.

According to Khalid Moin, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, the University was planning on a range of new courses that are in demand since last year. He further explained that the University has already taken an approval from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for the programme. Though the University has various professional courses at all levels in electrical engineering, specialized courses are much in demand which help in giving a deeper insight into the subject, he added.

Moin also said that looking at the electrical power demand in the country, there is a need for specialized professionals in different sectors. In addition, India has a potential power sector, which needs to be diversified and developed. This could be made possible only when our country has a large workforce of professionals dealing with problems at the smallest level, he said.

The power sector in the country is more of a public sector undertaking with the involvement of only a few private players. While discussing about the future of the course, he anticipated that with the kind of growing demand in the power sector, there will be no shortage of jobs.

Moreover, after completing the course, students can secure employment in government power grids, power plants, research projects, etc. Also, they can be part of government schemes to bring in alternative means of power supply in the rural and backward areas. This to-be-launched M Tech programme will provide hands-on training to students as a major part of its curriculum.

Students with a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, instrumentation, electronic or communications engineering with not less than 60% aggregate marks will be eligible to apply for the course. Also, students appearing for the exam will be entitled to GATE scholarships. However, admissions will be made on the basis of candidates' performance in the entrance test, to be held on July 7, 2012, followed by an interview. Last date of receipt of completed application forms is April 30, 2012.
