Allahabad University Introduces Mobile Learning

The authorities at the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) of Allahabad University have introduced the concept of Mobile-learning at the centre of Food and Technology through a joint programme of teachers and learners.

Detailing on the initiative, director, IPS, Prof G.K. Rai, said, IPS has taken a new technology based initiative that of using mobile technology enabled learning solution for English proficiency and work-place skill. Prof Rai further said that mEducation is a technology-enabled learning solution available to learners anytime, anywhere. Any portable device, such as a tablet, laptop or even mobile phone that provides access to educational content through mobile connectivity (2G, 3G, or 4G complemented by mobile-based Wi-Fi) can be a tool for mEducation.

The portable language lab consists of 21 tablets, 20 tablets for students and one for teacher, packed in a trolley. Internet connectivity is provided through a CISCO router. The trolley also has a projector and speakers so that teacher can project from anywhere. The tablets are pre-loaded with the course work, English Edge designed by LIQVID, a Noida based company.

mEducation would improve the learning process by removing the constraints of time and location. The course would have the facility of video recording and play back facility. Students can do project based exercises, like video shoot, and conversation. The master teacher tablet would monitor and control the activity of all student tablets leading to undivided attention of teacher to all students equally and monitoring their progress. The tablets are battery powered and hence provide uninterrupted long sessions in a portable lab.
