IIT Refunds Fee of Aggrieved Candidates

Panaji: Students who have sought for admissionsinto various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the nation for 2010 but later on decided to not to get enrolled have received a refund of their fees. They have received the refund of Rs 39,000 from the IITs this week after they had petitioned the Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, in September this year over the amount's non-refund.

As per sources, parents, whose wards had sought admissions in various IITs in the country but later opted out, had complained to Sibal claiming non-refund of fees paid to the respective technical schools to enter round two of admissions.

From the beginning of 2010, admissions to IITs were made online to change the one-to-one counseling system. Students were allotted a course on merit-cum-choice basis in the first round of admissions. To be eligible for the second round of admissions, the students had to pay by DD of 40,000 each equivalent to the first semester fees at the IITs as approval of the seat allotted.

However, later on, students who opted out of IITs in favor of other technical institutes, had complained to Sibal that three months after the admission process was over, they were still to get the refund as promised. About five parents of such candidates across the country were able to track each other and wrote to Sibal contending that as per the FAQs listed on the admission website of the IITs, it was stated that the parents would be handed back the money after deducting 1,000 as processing fees.
