IGNOU Introduces Human Rights Courses for Cops

New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU’s) Vice Chancellor (VC), V N Rajsekharan Pillai, on Wednesday i.e. December 30, 2009 has made the announcement that IGNOU would soon launch a programme in human rights for policemen. As per sources, the first training programme would be launched for police constables at the Haryana Police Academy in Madhuban. The programmes would be offered in both distance education and online modes, followed by interactive workshops.  
 
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the IGNOU and the NHRC on Wednesday, for launching the programmes at three levels - basic course for constables / sub-inspectors, advanced course for middle level police officers, and training of trainers. According to Mr Pillai this would be the first effort of NHRC along with IGNOU, to incorporate human rights culture among the Indian police and to develop people-friendly practices.
 
Mr Pillia further added that IGNOU has developed a human rights training portal along with interactive self-instructional materials. E-Gyankosh and School of Law, IGNOU would provide technical online support and develop interactive self-instructional materials for the course. Moreover, the NHRC would help in the development of the courses in the initial period in the form of resource support and funding the development of course materials, its printing, development of audio-visual materials and video lectures.
