New Delhi: University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to discuss the matter of increasing the posts of non-teaching staff in Delhi University (DU) in a meeting to be held on March 10, 2010. Following a month long protest of the non-teaching staff of DU in order to increase their posts, UGC has taken the step.
DU management has increased seats for both students as well as teachers after the implementation of 27 per cent Other Backward Class (OBC) quota, but did not advertise for any new post for the non-teaching staff. According to the sources at the UGC, the agenda would be put forth before a committee on March 10, which will mull over increasing the posts of non-teaching staff in DU. S.C. Joshi, General Secretary of the Union has said that no seats have been created for the non-teaching staff, while a major chunk of around 7,000 seats have been allocated for teaching in the university, which amounts to increase of 54% university infrastructure.
Further, it is likely that the UGC gives its nod to provide funds required for the additional posts. However, the demands of the College Karamchari Union and DU included their pending arrears, as well as increase in the seats of non-teaching staff. As per sources, it has been assured by the UGC chairperson that the non-teaching staff would be receiving their arrears in a few days, but the union denies to withdraw its protest until a written assurance.
