New Delhi: On October 19, 2010, officials from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) said that the university has introduced a Diploma in Teaching German as a foreign language. As per sources, the new programme has been launched in order to meet the rising demand for German teachers in the country.
Further, sources told thatthe Diploma in Teaching German as a Foreign Language was launched in association with the Max Mueller Bhavan (Goethe-Institute), New Delhi, and the University of Vienna by German Ambassador Thomas Matussek, Austrian Ambassador Ferdinand Maultachl and Switzerland Ambassador Phillipe Welti.
Thomas Matussek said that the programme was a part of the German embassy's endeavor to spread awareness about their country in India, especially in second-tier cities. Learning German opens doors to 13 European countries, he added. Sources informed that the programme will have 60 hours of practice in the classrooms of leading schools in the country.
Moreover, sources told that nearly 340 students have already enrolled for the programme. Renu Bharadwaj, Project Coordinator, said that at present, this programme will be offered in Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai. In addition, she told that it is a prototype model and will be followed by teaching programmes in other foreign languages.
