New Delhi: This year, St. Stephen's College has made some important amendments in the admission strategies. The college has adopted new admission guidelines, which were decided at a recent supreme council meeting. The new admission guidelines were revealed on Tuesday i.e. on June 2, 2010 by St. Stephen's Principal Valson Thampu.
St. Stephen's Collegewill now slip back to the admission guidelines that were followed during the tenure of former principal Anil Wilson, before 2008.According to the new guidelines, the college will be admitting more students from the General category this year. Also, the 'merit gap' for Christian students has been reduced, which has led to an increase in the number of general category seats and a lowering in the number of minority seats.
The eligibility standard for admitting Christian students to the college last year was 60 percent marks. However, the criterion now has been changed to 15 percent less than the general cut off percentage in each stream. The weightage of marks for admission for students from the general category still continues to be 75 percent for class 12 marks, 10 percent for Class 10 marks and 15 percent for the interview.
Another rule that has been changed this year is that the unfilled seats of the three percent physically handicapped (PH) category seats will now be moved to the general PH category. The vacant seats from the Christian PH category had been shifted to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories last year.
Further, according to the new rules, college principals can relax 15 percent of the differential gap in case of admissions under the supernumerary (sports) category, for six candidates who opt for Urdu as their optional language in the BA programme and for the 3 percent of PH candidates from all categories. In all, 5 percent, that is, 21 seats have been allotted to the supernumerary category this year.
