New Delhi: IIT Council has given its approval for the setting up of new campus of Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi (IIT-Delhi) in Haryana. The Council has given its nod for the proposal on Wednesday. The new extension centre would have advanced research facilities and be spread over 100-acres of land.
As per the sources, the Government of Haryana has offered to give land free of cost for the project. Moreover, to keep the centre in the vicinity of the capital, the centre could be established in Bahadurgarh or its adjoining areas. Earlier, it was likely that centre could come up at Rohtak, however, the idea has been dropped.
Surendra Prasad, Director, IIT-Delhi, said that the committee was waiting for the proposal to be approved from IIT council before selecting any particular location for the campus. He added that, after getting the council’s consent the committee will start searching and finalizing a good location.
Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda, who attended the meeting regarding the proposal, said that setting up of IIT Extension Centre would serve as a great initiative for the development of educational infrastructure in the state.
IIT Delhi campus, located at Hauz Khas was established in the year 1961. Spread across an area of 320 acres is the smallest amongst other IITs. Therefore, a need to bring an extension centre came up and was in the discussions since many years.
