IIT-Delhi to Set Up New Campus at Haryana

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi will soon set up its new branch at Haryana. As per sources, this expansion has been planned after the Haryana Government offered 100 acres of land to the institute.

M Balakrishnan, Deputy Director, IIT-D, has said that before deciding on how to utilize the land in the best possible way, it is essential to get the consent from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). He informed that they have already written to MHRD about the land offered to IIT-D and after they hear from them they will use the land as an extension to their current campus.

Besides, as per Rakesh Kumar, registrar, IIT-D, B Tech programmes will not be offered at the new campus. The new campus will rather be used for research related activities and entrepreneurship development programmes. The new campus will ease out space-related problems that the IIT is facing now. Of the total land area of 300 acres of IIT-Delhi, 50 acres is forest area.

The available spread of land area already in use is not sufficient enough to allow construction facilities like more research labs. Also, the student strength of IIT-D at present is approximately 8000, for which the current campus is not adequate. In addition, the other problem faced by the institute is the scarcity of faculty. The institute is short of approximately 200 faculty members, as against the sanction.
