Jamia Millia Islamia to Offer Master's Course in Visual Storytelling

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia will offer a full-time master’s course in visual storytelling from the upcoming academic session 2013. The University has taken this step to fulfill the growing demand of skilled personnel in the field of graphics and animation. Newly launched programme will be offered at the University's AJK Mass Communication Research Centre.

Ms Shaibani Azam, course coordinator for MA Visual Effects and Animation of JMI has said that very few institutes offer full-time Master's course in visual graphics and animation and the number decreases at the higher level of education. She further added that most of the institutions offer diploma programme and JMI has also been imparting diploma in the same field since 2007. But the growing supply-demand deficit of skilled professionals in graphics and animation has forced the University to upgrade its diploma programme into two year full-time programme. It will certainly give more time to the students in order to sharpen their skills and prepare for the challenges of this highly creative field.

The course will be offered in four semesters with the introduction of basic concepts of visual communication, animation and filmmaking in the first semester and moves on to include modules on 2D & 3D animation and business management. Also, the course content comprises of gaming and life drawing. The practical component of the programme is the most crucial part as the students will have to work on individual production across all semesters.

Talking about the aim of the programme, Ms Azam said that it will help students in extracting the ideas to take advantage of the convergence of media in the process of visual story telling. Moreover, it has a strong research component where students would be trained extensively in research methodologies so as they could write research papers in future. In short, the course will be a mix of academic, technical and creative components.

At present, the University has 20 seats for the course and will offer admission on the basis of merit obtained in entrance test, followed by interview. Candidates who have graduated in any stream from a recognized University / College are eligible to apply.
