IGNOU to Set Up Center for the Deaf

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU is all set to establish the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC), for the deaf community, on October 4, 2011. As per sources, the centre has been set up with the support of the social justice and empowerment ministry.
 
The announcement regarding the launch of the center  was made by the University on October 2, 2011 (Sunday). Besides, to grace the occasion on Tuesday i.e. on October 4, 2011, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik and Human Resource Development and Communications Minister Kapil Sibal will be present.
 
IGNOU Vice Chancellor V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, had said that the centre is the realization of the long cherished dream of the deaf community in India. He mentioned that it is an exclusive education project for teaching, learning, training and capacity building for the vast deaf population. In addition, it will be a full time teaching and training center for Indian Sign Language combined with distance teaching/learning opportunities.
 
Furthermore, he informed that this research centre is the first of its kind in India with centers attached to IGNOU. Moreover, the center would consist of short term, medium and full fledged programmes for both the un-trained and experienced teachers of the deaf schools.
