Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Inaugurates Panjab University Community Radio

Chandigarh: On Sunday i.e. February 13, 2011, the Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni has inaugurated the Panjab University’s community radio. As per sources, the community radio will be called as Jyotirgamaya. Further, sources informed that Mrs. Soni inaugurated the radio station at the School of Communication Studies building on the university campus.
 
Mrs. Soni told the sources that considering the reach of radio and its affordability, this medium of mass communication holds great potential. The minister added that, she would see (to it) that the existing coverage range of PU radio (which is six km) is allowed to be extended as soon as possible. In addition, she said that it is the endeavour of her ministry to promote community radio stations as these are the best bonding agents and they involve the local population.
 
As per sources, the community radio would provide information allied to education, health, environment, society, cultural. Besides, the community radio is used for making announcements specific to the university, sources added. Furthermore, sources informed that PU community radio is the second community radio in Chandigarh.
 
The first community radio is run by a leading private school, sources informed. At the end, Mrs. Soni said that there was need for self-regulation on general entertainment channels and the government was close to formulating a framework under which this could be made possible.
