DU Adopts Measures to Curb Ragging

Delhi University (DU) has adopted several measures to make sure that no ragging take place within its campus. As per sources, the new academic session at DU has commenced with no reported case of ragging.

The university has put all its effort to ensure a ragging free environment for the freshers, so that they can enjoy their first days at college. Sources informed that Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) has set up an antiragging squad, which comprise of 204 students. The squad includes college presidents and counsellors.

This squad has been assigned the task of taking rounds in all DU colleges in order to make sure that no fresher is being ragged. Even letters have been circulated to all student union presidents of different colleges notifying them regarding the antiragging plans by DUSU. While DUSU has come up with tough plans to tackle ragging, many colleges on the other hand are opting for softer but equally effective ways.

Besides, all the arrangements to curb ragging, colleges have installed CCTV surveillance to keep a track of activities going on around the campus. However, Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean, students’ welfare, DU, feels that the university cannot rely on preparations made by DUSU as far as the issue of ragging is concerned. He said that as per UGC rules, ragging is a criminal offence and any student who is caught indulging in it is punishable. The punishment can be suspension, rustication and even cancellation of the degree.

Furthermore, Mr Tuteja informed that the University has already issued a circular to all colleges, requesting them to follow a certain procedure with regards to freshers. Moreover, the University has set up their own mobile squads, which will watch students on campus, libraries and in hostels (both girls and boys). In addition, antiragging helpline numbers have also been set-up.
