This year, seats remain vacant in country's premier b-schools i.e. the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs). After the closing of admissions and commencement of classes, seats remain still unoccupied in some of the newly established IIMs.
Atleast 55 seats are yet to be filled up in three of the new IIMs - Shillong, Trichy and Rohtak. The source mentioned that it is a national loss, adding that vacant seats meant loss of revenue. In total, there are 13 IIMs across the nation with an enrollment capacity of nearly 2,700 seats in postgraduate programmes.
Out of the total 120 seats at IIM-Shillong, 106 have been occupied. In case of IIM-Trichy 84 seats have been filled, leaving 36 seats vacant. Moreover, five seats remain vacant in IIM Rohtak. All these three IIMs, part of the seven that were set up last year, have announced to close their admissions for this year and have started classes since July 4.
Himansu Rai, CAT Convener, has said that some seats remain vacant in the new IIMs every year. He said that this could be avoided if all the IIMs do not conduct their admission simultaneously. He added that the IIMs stick to the uniform admission schedule under which it has to be completed by July 2. He also added that if the younger IIMs adjourn their admission process by a fortnight, they would not face this problem.
